This was Leek’s old fire station in the Market Square. Cheap food and loads of offers. Good for SKY football with loads and loads of screens and seating. 2 meals for a tenner with a drink. Food is just OK.

The Boat Inn Cheddleton ***
Basford Bridge Lane. ST13 7EQ. Hard to find, good place to go. 01538 360683. Good place to visit. Busy little place on the canalside. It has had the same landlord for years. Good Sunday lunches. Good in Summer and Winter. It is also next to the Cheddleton Steam Railway which is a bonus. The steam railway goes on a fantastic trip towards Alton Towers. Good beer . 15 minutes by car on the Cheddleton Road (5 mins out of Leek past the Britannia Building Society headquarters)
The Holly Bush Denford ***
01538 371819
Ideal place for walking dogs along the canal and aquaduct. Open fires, good beer, same landlord for a long time. Very busy on bank holidays – best avoided. A good night pub with barges outside. Better food at night than in the day as the chef works at night. Basic menu in the day. Hard to find but worth it. 10 minutes in a car. You need to get onto the Leek to Stoke road. Go past Morrisons in Leek out of town towards Stoke-on-Trent. Go up the hill past three speed cameras. Go past the Wheel pub (another good pub with great food). Drive for a couple of minutes then turn left and head towards Denford. Head down to the canal. Loads of parking. You can take your dog inside. Your can shorten the trip to the Hollybush by avoiding Leek and going up Dunwood Lane and then turn left onto ‘Devil’s Lane’. Go to the end of Devil’s Lane and turn left onto School Lane. You will come out at a crossroads opposite the Wheel pub. Turn right and drive for 2 mins then turn Left towards Denford. The pub is at the bottom of the bank over a bridge over the canal. Nice old English pub.
The Yew Tree in Cauldon Lowe –the Oldest pub in the Moorlands ****
This is near to Waterhouses which is on the road to Ashbourne. If you are into real ale, real pubs and antiques this is for you. They don’t do any food apart from pork pies and crisps. It has won pub of the year many times. It is like Steptoe’s and Son inside. Piano, darts, skittles and loads of ___________. You need to go with loads of 2 pences to find out what is there! It is tricky to find but well worth it.
The Ramblers Retreat ****

The Plough at Endon **
This is just up the road from the Black Horse and is on the same side of the road. £5-£7 per person carvery. I only go when I am really hungry and can’t be bothered to cook as it is cheap and you can help yourself to as much veg as you like.
