Carvery-type
meals are good but bar meals are fair. Chips and beef sandwiches are good**
Walk
time 15 mins. Boat time 15 mins. A bit old-fashioned inside. Busy in summer at
weekends due to weddings but otherwise a quiet place.
The Engine Room Leek **
This
was Leek’s old fire station in the Market Square. Cheap food and loads of
offers. Good for SKY football with loads and loads of screens and seating. 2
meals for a tenner with a drink. Food is just OK.
The
Red Lion (Next door to Engine Room)
This
has live music and dancing and bar meals.
The Three Horseshoes ***
Blackshaw
Moor (15 minutes away by car on the Buxton Road. Go past the Co-op in Leek and
head towards Buxton. After about 5-10 minutes you will see the Three Horseshoes
on your left on the main Buxton road.
Telephone 01538 300296. Good food. Good carvery. Worth going and good for
families. You can visit the Roaches afterwards (Leek’s own Rockies) and see
the ‘Winking Man’ – a face seen in a rock formation that winks at you as
you drive by.
The
Three Horseshoes has bands and music and comedy nights. It is a big place but
cosy. There is also a hotel there too.
Leek,
Sheepmarket Street (off St Edward’s Street). 01538 398289. Pizzas e.t.c. Been
a few times. Quite good. Sometimes very quiet. Good menu choice. Easy to find
and park free on St Edward’s Street.
Indian
Food. St Edward’s Street, Leek. 01538 398763. Never had a bad meal there. Good
service, clean. Nice place, easy to park. They do takeaways also. Quite busy at
weekends.
Never
had a bad meal there. Good service, clean. Nice place, easy to park. They do
takeaways also. Quite busy at weekends. 01538 388185. This is in the Smithfield
Centre opposite the monument in Leek. It is just around the corner from Lloyds
Bank and the florist called ‘Possibilities’. You can park on Haywood Street
by Barclays Bank and cross at the traffic lights or park on Derby Street.
Basford
Bridge Lane. ST13 7EQ. Hard to find, good place to go. 01538 360683. Good place
to visit. Busy little place on the canalside. It has had the same landlord for
years. Good Sunday lunches. Good in Summer and Winter. It is also next to the
Cheddleton Steam Railway which is a bonus. The steam railway
goes on a fantastic trip towards Alton Towers. Good beer . 15 minutes by
car on the Cheddleton Road (5 mins out of Leek past the Britannia Building
Society headquarters)

Ideal
place for walking dogs along the canal and aquaduct. Open fires, good beer, same
landlord for a long time. Very busy on bank holidays – best avoided. A good
night pub with barges outside. Better food at night than in the day as the chef
works at night. Basic menu in the day. Hard to find but worth it. 10 minutes in
a car. You need to get onto the Leek to Stoke road. Go past Morrisons in Leek
out of town towards Stoke-on-Trent. Go up the hill past three speed cameras. Go
past the Wheel pub (another good pub with great food). Drive for a couple of
minutes then turn left and head towards Denford. Head down to the canal. Loads
of parking. You can take your dog inside. Your can shorten the trip to the
Hollybush by avoiding Leek and going up Dunwood Lane and then turn left onto
‘Devil’s Lane’. Go to the end of Devil’s Lane and turn left onto School
Lane. You will come out at a crossroads opposite the Wheel pub. Turn right and
drive for 2 mins then turn Left towards Denford. The pub is at the bottom of the
bank over a bridge over the canal. Nice old English pub.
The
Yew Tree in Cauldon Lowe –the Oldest pub in the Moorlands ****
This
is near to Waterhouses which is on the road to Ashbourne. If you are into real
ale, real pubs and antiques this is for you. They don’t do any food apart from
pork pies and crisps. It has won pub of the year many times. It is like
Steptoe’s and Son inside. Piano, darts, skittles and loads of ___________. You
need to go with loads of 2 pences to find out what is there! It is tricky to
find but well worth it.
The Ramblers Retreat ****
This
is near to Alton Towers. It is a fine place to recharge your batteries after a
visit to Alton Towers. Great Sunday lunches. 01538 702730. Alton Road, Alton,
ST10 4BU. Great cakes and teas. Set in woodland near a river.

Traditional
pub food. Stokies travel to the wheel from Stoke-on-Trent. Good pies, roasts
e.t.c. Easy to find and open all day. 5 minutes away from Morrison’s heading
up to bank on the road towards Stoke.
Endon
Good
pub, good food. Good service. Good prices. This is by the petrol station in
Endon on the right as you drive from Rudyard to Stoke (via Dunwood Lane).
This
is just up the road from the Black Horse and is on the same side of the road. £5-£7
per person carvery. I only go when I am really hungry and can’t be bothered to
cook as it is cheap and you can help yourself to as much veg as you like.
Stafford

Nice
village pub, food ok.

Nice
village pub, very good food.
Oatcake
shop opposite Aldi in Leek. A great breakfast type oat based pancake with
various fillings. Local food served in a brown paper bag. Fillings include
bacon, cheese, tomato, mushrooms e.t.c. Leek’s answer to Cornish pasties!
Cheap and comforting and they fill you up. Take out only. Other oatcake shops
are available all around Staffordshire. Rick Stein has raved about them when he
was in Stoke. The café in the Market Place in Leek does full English Breakfasts
including oatcakes and it is good for people watching from there. You can always
get oatcakes too from a van opposite Boots in Leek at weekends.

Wincle
This
was the best place to eat for miles but it has just been taken over so we
don’t know what it is like now. 15-20 mins in a car and a bit tricky to find
but worth it as it is a lovely English pub. We plan to visit soon.

Fantastic
place, better at night as a bigger selection of food. Big place. Good value. All
you can eat buffet. Never had a bad meal there. Good for large parties as they
have big round tables. Includes Mongolian chef, sushi, large choice of dishes,
crepes, etc.etc.etc. As with all
Chinese food you will be drinking loads the next day. Only go if you are really
hungry. Good parking. Head to Stoke, then Newcastle-u-Lyme then to Milehouse. It
is on the A34 on a big roundabout with its own car park. One of the best all you
can eat places locally.
Fine
dining. We have not been here for a while but there are always good reports.

This is a great place and great for special occasions. They have large round tables for big parties. Excellent service.
Trentham
Awakes *****
(The
Old Trentham Gardens). This is off the A34 in Trentham. There are loads of shops
there and different places to eat. There is a large food court in the garden
centre. Miniature railway, ferris wheel, lake walks, Italian gardens. A
must. Ice skating in winter. This is near to the Monkey park so the two places
can be combined for a visit.
Buxton
****
This
is a great place to visit. 12 miles from Leek. Loads of places to eat from Pizza
Express, The Café @ the Green Pavillion (this is my favourite with home cooked
food and papers to read).
Buxton
is a spa town where you can bottle up Buxton water for free so take some
containers with you. (Fill up near the Crescent). The water is warm when you
fill up as it comes from a deep spring.
There
is also a rope park ‘Go Ape’ in Buxton – worth a visit.
Great
place to visit with lead mines and good chippies. Also a cable car to ride on.
Knutsford*****
Visit
Kings Street – a very swishy street with restaurants and shops and galleries.
Samshi
Yakatori in Wilmslow is good with traditional floor cushion seating upstairs and
a very good ‘sumo wrestlers banquet’.
Windy Ridge Cafe
The Ashbourne road
A
great truckers cafe that does hearty meals and all day breakfasts. Good value.
Papers to read.
